SIBIZ receives spatial excellence award for NSW SES mapbook

SIBIZ has received a Queensland Spatial Excellence Award in the People and Community category, for the production of a digital map book created for the State Emergency Service of New South Wales.  The award was presented on 19th July at the Queensland Spatial Conference dinner held at Movie World on the Gold Coast. "It was a surprise for SIBIZ to receive the award having only just opened its doors, however it is a good reflection on the functionality and strength of the GeoPDF products", said Brian Spier, director of SIBIZ.

Mapping and the collection of spatial information plays a vital role in the support of emergency planning and operational decisions within communities. The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) wanted to ensure that key information, in the form of portable digital maps, was readily available to its 10,000 volunteer members. The SES also wanted the ability to collect local information from its volunteers to allow update of its core spatial data.

The solution was a structured MapBook based upon the GeoPDF format. SIBIZ assembled 756 maps covering the entire state of NSW into an inter-linked document that included spatial bookmarks providing convenient street intersection references.  The Mapbook features make it easy for volunteers, with no GIS experience, to navigate to the desire location and customise the map with SES designed stamps and mark-ups.  The geo-referenced mark-ups can be exported in shape file format to provide local content for the enterprise GIS.
